Rotate Your Running Shoes

Even if you can't bear to take a day off from running, don't hold your shoes to the same standard. Resting your running shoes for 24 hours or so gives them a chance to air out, bounce back from the pounding of your feet and last longer overall, according to Mindy Solkin, owner and head coach of The Running Center in New York. How do you keep running when your shoes are taking a break? Alternate between two pairs. Start breaking in a second pair when your current shoes are half-worn. When the older pair is toast, consign them to lesser tasks, such as walking the dog and mowing the lawn, and get another new pair. That way, you'll always have a broken-in pair in good condition for long runs and races, and you'll also get more mileage out of both pairs.
