FitTip: Has Your Footwear Reached Its Expiration Date?

You’re not doing yourself any favors hanging on to that favorite pair of shoes. Here’s why.

If your athletic shoes need replacing, don't delay. Otherwise, experts say, you're mistreating your bones and joints, subjecting them to high impact without the benefit of shock absorbers.

Old shoes that lack proper padding will also worsen any preexisting foot problems you may have, warn podiatrists. How can you tell when it's time to give up your comfortably worn shoes? One indication is when soles show wear, another is when shoes tilt to one side when placed on a hard, flat surface.

Runners can also use mileage as a marker. The average runner will need a new pair after logging 400 to 500 miles. Don't wait too long to make the switch; if you grow accustomed to exercising in worn-out shoes and then switch to a new, thoroughly padded pair, ironically you'll be putting stress on your knees and Achilles tendons.
